Human motivation and Freud’s theory of energy discharge

Resumen: Los psicoanalistas y los psicólogos clínicos suelen ser críticos con la psicología experimental, no sólo respecto a sus métodos de abordaje, sino también respecto a los constructos básicos que subyacen a las teorías conductistas de la motivación y la conducta. Algunas de estas críticas pueden estar justificadas, pero los clínicos no siempre se dan cuenta de que los conceptos básicos que subyacen a la psicología freudiana reflejan un enfoque teórico muy similar al que se encuentra en la teoría de los reflejos de Pavlov y en el conductismo. Tanto la psicología conductista como el psicoanálisis elaboraron teorías del comportamiento en términos de conceptos que no se originaron en el estudio del comportamiento en sí, sino que fueron tomados prestados de ciencias como la física, que estudian fenómenos con características bastante diferentes. Se debe principalmente a este hecho que las teorías conductistas actuales conciban la motivación como una reducción de la necesidad en forma de descarga de energía, un concepto esencialmente físico.
Abstract: Psychoanalyst and clinical psychologists are generally critical of experimental psychology, not only with respect to its methods of approach, but also with respect to the basic constructs underlying behaviourist theories of motivation and conduct. Some of these criticisms may well be justified, but the clinicians do not always realize that the basic concepts underlying Freudian psychology reflect a theoretical approach closely similar to that found in Pavlov's reflex theory and in behaviourism. Both behaviourist psychology and psychoanalysis worked out theories of behaviour in terms of concepts which did not originate in the study of behaviour itself, but were borrowed from sciences such as physics, which study phenomena with quite different characteristics. It is mainly due to this fact that current behaviour theories conceive of motivation as need reduction in the form of energy discharge –an essentially physical concept.
