Consciousness, behavior, and personality

Resumen: El concepto de conciencia sigue estando asociado a una de las experiencias más traumáticas de la historia de la vida de la psicología científica, es decir, el introspeccionismo. La herida aún no ha cicatrizado; la conciencia sigue significando para muchas personas una amenaza para la ciencia del comportamiento. No estaría justificado, por tanto, correr el riesgo de suscitar reacciones emocionales reintroduciendo el tema si no existiera la esperanza de que una revocación y un replanteamiento del problema en la situación actual pudieran conllevar algún efecto terapéutico y, con el tiempo, ayudar a la psicología en su desarrollo hacia una mayor madurez. Madurez, de hecho, significa entrar en contacto con el mundo real de la conducta y enfrentarse a los problemas que surgen en él.
La conciencia, ahora, es justo lo que pone al hombre en contacto con el mundo conductual. Contrariamente a lo que se suele creer, no debe considerarse necesariamente relacionada con el introspeccionismo y el estudio de los llamados "estados de conciencia".
Abstract: The concept of consciousness still remains associated with one of the most traumatic experiences in the life history of scientific psychology, i.e., introspectionism. The wound has not yet healed; consciousness still means for many people a menace to behavioral science. It would not be justified, therefore, to run the risk of arousing emotional reactions by reintroducing the subject if there were no hope that a revocation and a restatement of the problem in the present situation might entail some therapeutic effect and eventually help psychology in its development to greater maturity. Maturity, in fact, means getting in contact with the real behavioral world and facing the problems arising there.
Consciousness, now, is just what brings man in contact with the behavioral world. Contrary to what is generally believed, it should not be considered as necessarily related to introspectionism and the study of socalled "states of consciousness."
